The left internationally and in this country has struggled to know how to position itself in relation to the war in Ukraine. Between Putin’s nationalist and imperialist ambitions, NATO expansion and the reactionary nature of the Ukraine regime, where and with whom should the left stand? Part of the problem is our general lack of knowledge of developments in the former states of the USSR, especially of working-class struggles and their movements.
Amandla Magazine, the People’s Dialogue and AIDC invites you to engage with and hear first-hand from a Ukrainian leftist and activist of the socialist party, Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement). We are taking advantage of the visit of Oleksandr Kyselov to South Africa to host him and hear first-hand on the war, the workers’ movement in Ukraine and the experience of building a democratic socialist movement in the shadow of Russian and NATO imperialism.
Oleksandr is a native of Donetsk, a city under the control of pro-Russian forces. He has been an activist in the youth and student movement and is now a member of Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement), which stands up for workers’ rights and fights for the ideals of democratic socialism.
