Implications of the VAT increase withdrawal

Yesterday, the national treasury announced a reversal of the previously proposed VAT increase. The Alternative Information and Development Centre (AIDC) and partners issued a joint statement asserting that replacing a VAT increase with budget cuts is not a victory for unemployed and working-class South Africans but rather represents a loss. AIDC’s Tax Justice Project Officer, Chloé Van Biljon, was live on Radio Al Ansaar to talk about the implications of the withdrawal of the VAT increase for the average South African and how it affects their monthly budget at the tills.
