[RESOURCES] Eskom Transformed: THE PIC, ESKOM DEBT & FINANCING A JUST ENERGY TRANSITION
The multiple crises currently facing Eskom, South Africas largest energy producer and emitter of greenhouse gasses, have inspired spirited debate on the ways of solving them. The largest areas of focus to date have been on governance (in particular Unbundling), Eskom’s role vis-a-vis renewable energy, and the financial crisis facing the entity.
To this end, the Alternative Information and Development Centre which has been an active participant in contributing to these debates, has put together a brief resource pack of some of our contributions to this debate.
These resources should aid you in understanding the basic history of Eskom as an entity, the origins of its current crisis, the nature of its financial decay over the years, the urgency of justly transitioning to renewable energy with Eskom as a leading vehicle.
The resources point towards a vision of the energy sector that is publically financed and socially owned, that understands that any transition to renewables will not be painless. In understanding the challenges inherent in this the resource pack begins with the Eskom Research Reference Group’s “Eskom Transformed: Achieving a Just Energy Transition for South Africa” report. This groundbreaking report presents one of the most comprehensive investigations into how we need to transform Eskom into a financially viable, socially owned public utility.
