🔊 Join us ahead of the 2024 Budget Speech for a conference on alternatives to debt and austerity! 🌍
The Alternative Information and Development Centre will be hosting a two-day conference preceding the 2024 Budget Speech from 14 to 15 February 2024. Today, South Africa spends more on servicing its debt than it does on health, social development, or peace and security. The National Treasury’s focus on a primary budget surplus exacerbates inequality, poverty, and unemployment. Moreover, these austerity measures have been characterised as self-defeating, as they undermine future growth and productivity, thereby shrinking the size of the economy. The purpose of the conference is to highlight the impacts of austerity; assess developments in relation to public debt in South Africa; and explore alternative public debt management strategies including proposing solutions that do not encompass the same problems attributed to austerity.
