The Alternative Information & Development Centre (AIDC) submission to Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance addresses the 2026 draft Rates, Taxation Laws Amendment (TLAB), and Tax Administration Laws Amendment (TALAB) Bills. While welcoming certain reporting provisions, the submission strongly critiques key proposals such as increases to the medical scheme fees tax credit and the retirement fund contribution deduction cap, arguing that they disproportionately benefit higher-income earners and worsen inequality. It recommends progressive alternatives, including adjusting personal income tax brackets, introducing wealth and dividend tax reforms, and addressing broader illicit financial flows, tax havens, and corporate profit-shifting.
