Project Officer (Economist) – Economic Justice

Job Description

This is a full-time 12-month contract


Roles and Responsibilities

Research

  • Undertake research and analysis to produce accessible evidence-based materials including research publications, briefing papers, …etc.
  • Represent AIDC’s perspectives and views in workshops, seminar and conferences.

Capacity building

  • Conduct workshops and other popular education forums including webinars geared toward strengthening capacity of trade unions, social movements and civil society.

Advocacy

  • Provide campaign support and materials (including fact sheets, infographics, )for social movement and trade union campaigns; and
  • Conduct media engagements (radio, tv interviews etc.)

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Training in economics, political economy, or relevant social sciences.
  • Strong analytical and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer literacy is essential especially in MS Outlook, MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with all team members and stakeholders.

  • Undertake Research and analysis of decarbonisation of SA’s Economy.
  • Engagement with Government Policies on combating climate change and advancing a just transition.
  • Conduct capacity-building initiatives on climate change, decarbonization and climate jobs with trade union formations and social movements.
  • Develop popular materials (including briefing papers, fact sheets, infographics, etc) on combatting climate change and advancing a just transition for trade unions and social movements;
  • Support campaigns for climate and ecological justice, and
  • Represent AIDC perspectives in various climate justice and energy forums and platforms including writing opinion pieces and conducting media interviews on AIDC’s climate justice work.

Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree advantageous but not mandatory;
  • Proven research and writing ability;
  • Commitment to social, economic and ecological justice, and
  • Affinity to working with trade unions and social movements.

Coordinator – Southern Africa Campaign on Corporate Impunity

Job Description

This is a full-time 12-month contract

AIDC is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as the Coordinator of the Southern Africa Campaign on Corporate Impunity. This position falls under the AIDC Programme on Alternatives to Extractivism and Climate Change. The campaign aims to bring together organizations and social movements from nine countries in Southern Africa that focus on various issues such as mining and extractivism, trade and investment agreements, the UN Binding Treaty on Transnational Corporations and Human Rights, food sovereignty, climate justice, land and agrarian justice, corporate power, women’s rights and feminism, and trade unionism.


Roles and Responsibilities

1) Coordination and Management:

  • Coordinate/facilitate the Reference Group
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the programme team
  • Manage and oversee campaign activities.

2) Research and Analysis:

  • Lead and conduct research on various topics related to the campaign, including corporate impunity, extractivism, trade and investment agreements, human rights, climate justice, and gender issues
  • Analyze and synthesize research findings, producing reports, policy briefs, and other relevant publications.

3) Fundraising and Reporting:

  • Assist with grant proposals and donor reports
  • Write narrative reports.

4) Representation and Advocacy:

  • Serve as a representative of AIDC and the campaign in networks, at national, regional, and international forums, conferences, and events
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships and collaborations with key partners.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience working with NGOs, social movements, trade unions, or academia, preferably in a coordination or managerial role
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in humanities or social science disciplines. A relevant master’s degree will be an advantage
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with fluency in English. Proficiency in Portuguese and French is desirable
  • Demonstrated research and analytical abilities, including experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative research and producing high-quality reports and publications
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues related to mining and extractivism, trade and investment agreements, human rights, climate justice, gender, and social justice.
