The AIDC, together with Trade Unions for Energy Democracy (TUED), the Transnational Institute (TNI), the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), and the National Union of Metalworkers South Africa (NUMSA), has conducted research on energy policy and the ongoing reforms to the South African energy sector. This research culminated in a report titled Eskom Transformed, followed by sustained engagement with labour unions and community-based organisations around the future of the energy sector. Informed by this background, the AIDC made a submission and comments on the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill [B-2022].
Both our engagement with labour and community-based organisations as well as the research we conducted as part of Eskom Transformed have raised serious concerns about the ability of the marketization project to deliver this promised relief to the crises in the energy sector.
We are deeply concerned about the impact that marketisation, as outlined in the Bill, will have on the future of the energy sector and its workers, as well as ordinary South Africans in general.
