PVC Steering Committee Statement on the No Fault Compensation Fund for Covid-19 Vaccines.
Peoples Vaccine Campaign | Statement | April 2020
The Peoples Vaccine Campaign (PVC), which was established in January 2021 in response to the slow progress made by the South African government to speed up Covid-19 Vaccine rollout, adds its voice to the growing concerns around unreasonable demands made by the big vaccine producers on the South African government for any vaccine purchase.
It is worrying that the big vaccine producers such as Johnson and Johnson , Astra Zeneca, Moderna and Pfizer are demanding the South African government submit to secret conditions for COVID-19 Vaccine purchasing. This is unacceptable in a democratic country where transparency and accountability should form the basis of our democracy. Government should not remain secretive and hide purchase agreements signed with the big vaccine producers from public scrutiny.
PVC re-iterates the calls made by the Peoples Health Movement, Health Justice Initiative and others that demand that the big vaccine producers take responsibility for loss and damage during purchase agreements with the South African government including possible serious side effects from vaccines.
PVC also demands an end to vaccine manufacturer secrecy and monopoly control.
– We want a vaccine that protects health for all.
– We want vaccine purchase agreement that are fair, transparent, equitable, accessible and affordable for all.
– Vaccines are a global public good, not a private commodity for profit.
Issued by the Peoples Vaccine Campaign.
