AIDC’s work is organised across three interconnected programme units. Together, these units combine research, popular education, movement building and advocacy to advance democratic, equitable and environmentally sustainable alternatives.
The Economic Justice Unit works to advance economic policies that place people’s needs, public services and social well-being above private profit. The unit conducts research, develops policy alternatives and supports advocacy on issues such as taxation, public finance, austerity, debt, inequality, trade, industrial policy and the financing of development.
Working with civil society organisations, labour movements and communities, the unit challenges economic policies that deepen poverty and inequality while promoting transformative approaches to public investment, decent work, redistribution and economic democracy. Read more.
Alternatives to Extractivism and Climate Change
The Alternatives to Extractivism and Climate Change Unit works with communities, workers and social movements affected by mining, fossil-fuel extraction, climate change and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The unit supports campaigns for climate justice, energy democracy, community consent and a just transition that protects livelihoods and strengthens community resilience. Through participatory research, popular education, advocacy and movement support, it challenges extractive development models and promotes socially owned, democratic and environmentally sustainable alternatives. The Movement Building Unit works to strengthen the collective power of communities, workers and grassroots organisations to organise, campaign and influence decisions affecting their lives.
The unit provides political education, organisational support, campaign development and spaces for learning, exchange and solidarity. It connects local struggles to broader national and regional movements, helping communities develop shared strategies, build alliances and hold government and corporate actors accountable.
