The Amadiba and the N2: The struggle for people’s development

The conflict over the N2 toll highway’s route through Pondoland in the Eastern Cape is escalating. The Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC) demands that the highway be rerouted from the coastline to the central Mbizana area of the Amadiba traditional land. This publication explains the rationale behind this demand and chronicles the decade-long struggle, including interactions with SANRAL and the government.

It is a joint effort by the AIDC, ACC, and ACC’s expert team, who have been involved since 2021. While the struggle began on the Amadiba coast, it now unites the broader Amadiba community, including those inland.

This newfound unity is attributed to the ACC’s continuous public awareness campaign and growing dissatisfaction with SANRAL’s dismissive attitude toward rural communities’ land rights concerns during this major, disruptive project.

The Amadiba community was once divided over the Xolobeni mining issue, pitting coastal residents against inland ones. However, these divisions have been resolved.  The photo on the front cover of the booklet captures the first-ever joint community march in Amadiba.

We hope that you find this booklet informative and valuable. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or if you require further information.
